ILLUSTRATION PROCESS: Working with your client

A few days ago Josh from RED POINT LABS contacted me to do some assigned concept art for Blood Realm, "The order sphere"Blood Realm is an epic collectable card game, based on the ancient roman/egyptian era, which by the way if you are not familiar with it yet, you should check it out.

The process of creating any art concept can be sometimes very tedious and things can go wrong very easily if the communication between you and your client isn't clear. Fortunately this time this wasn't the case for me. Josh was very nice during the whole process and very clear of the vision they have for the concept.

Josh: We can show a squadron of soldiers getting ready for war.  On the top of a hill, a leader is speaking to them, trying to inspire them, holding a flag.

After that I sent a very rough sketch for revision (see image 1). The point of sending a rough sketch is to make things easier for you and your client, and trust me when I say this will save yourself a lot of time and headaches in the future. It is also important to understand that it is very common to get feedback from your client after the first sketch.

Josh: I like the general approach to the image, but I want the guy standing on the mountain to look as if he is actively giving a motivational speech.  Is there any way you can make him look a bit more dynamic? Like maybe thrusting the flag forward at the roar of the crowd.  "FOR ROME!!!"

I agreed with Josh. The roman leader in the image was a too static and it didn't evoke any feeling of motivation at all. So I modified the pose of the roman leader, as well as added a bit of color and send it to Josh for a second revision.

After Josh gave me the green light to continue with the concept I started to add the details and incorporate some blues, since blue is the main color in the order sphere game.

Finally, after all the feedback and many hours of hard work, we came up with a very powerful image and I eagerly await the next assignment.

LOS MOSTROS DE ANTONIO

Have you ever imagined strange creatures with fuzzy and hairy hands, with a slimy tongue or 16 eyes? Well, "Los Mostros de Antonio" is all about that. This is one of my favorites projects so far for a very simple reason, I get to create and illustrate these creatures hidden inside my head, floating around on the boat of my imagination.

The guys from HAPPY TREE FRIENDS featured my illustration of "FLIPPY"

I am so excited that the guys at Happy Tree Friends decided to feature my illustration of “Flippy,” on both their Facebook Fan Page and their blog!  For this illustration, I chose to accentuate and exaggerate one of my favorite characteristics of Flippy, his evil side mwuahahahaha :)
